Default Driving in fog and headlights

Driving to work this morning and it was very foggy but with bright sunshine breaking through

Every so often I saw some numpty driving with no lights on and they got the normal reaction of shaking my head and calling them a poilte idiot

However I then noticed the new landrover in front of me kept turning the lights on and off and I realised that the auto lights where sensing the sunlight so as a result turned them off despite the fog and only having a visability of approx 20-25m

I then watched the cars coming in the opposite direction and realised most of them were newer cars with auto headlights

I know you can manually overide the auto function but then wondered how many people would even think of doing it? If its bright outside may not even notice they are off.

Seems like bit of a design fault

The only fault is the design fault with the person's brain behind the wheel who rely on automated systems and don't think for themselves any more.

Not sure about other manufacturers, but with my Vectra, if I leave the headlight switch on auto, and manually switch on the fog lights, the headlights also come on.

Not a design fault at all. If people arent clever enough to turn on their lights they shouldnt have a licence. There is a light on the dash to tell you if your lights are on. These are the same people who dont think they need there lights on at dusk or in rain.

It doesn't help that car manufacturers in more recent years light up the instrument binacle without the head lights being on. At least when they weren't on you knew your lights weren't on either.
