    Default Transmission Issue??

Sooooo...I have a 2003 Vectra C 2.2 CDTI with an Auto gearbox. It has just over 100k on the clock and I am having a problem.

Intermittently it locks me into 5th gear and a image of a car with a spanner sticking out of it comes up on the dash display. If I move into tiptronic control, I can only switch between 5th and 2nd with no gears in between.

Spoke to a mechanic and he said the error code is showing up as something to do with the transmission and he mentioned something about a seal going that is allowing water into the gearbox which 'is apparently setting off the alarm' or something.

Spoke to Sussex Automatic Transmissions and was told that its a common problem on Astras but they do see it on Vectras and they quoted me 2295 squid to fix. *AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGG*

Someone tell me that they have had a problem like this before and it was a common and cheap fix. The car is only worth 1750 - if that.

    Anyone? Anything? Please......

It could be coolant going into box from a failed seal between oil cooler and radiator. But that normally destroys all gears.
You can get it repaired a lot cheaper than that. Was quoted £1800 for a fully recon box for my 2.2 dti.
Clutchmasters in Coventry quoted £1200 to remove recon and refit box.

Have you looked at any breakers or salvage yards?

I havent considered breakers to be honest. Been thinking more about it and I think its probably easier for me to sell the car and maybe a mechanic will be lucky enough to snap it up and he can sort the work himself. Its much too much issue and cost for me and I really dont think I have the time for it. Shame. Really enjoyed the vectra while it was all up together.

Before giving up on it, you need to find out what gearbox is fitted to it. Either give reg no and chassis no to vx and they can tell you or if you look down between engine and battery box there is a plate on top of box telling you, eg AF33, AF17, AF50 etc. It does take some finding but its there. It may even be in your service book.
Once you have the number, we will go from there.

You firstly need to find out exactly what the fault codes are, then a definite diagnosis as to the cause, before you go to the drastic step of selling the car at a knockdown price.

Where can I find that out somewhere that's not going to charge 100 quid just to connect a computer to it?
