    Default EGR problem!?

I've fitted a new EGR after having stuttering problems, no power and smoke out the back of the car, yet it still stuttering and smoking, however, if I unplug the EGR 2 pin connector it drives lovely, more power, no stuttering or smoke, but, with it unplugged the eml comes on and it goes in to limp mode if you drive up hill. Today I took the whole thing apart again (EGR) to double check it was working ok etc, put it back together, plugged in connector and it drove like crap again! Unplugged it, drove fine.
Does anyone have a solution to this at all as it's doing my head in!

The EGR controls recirculation of exhaust gas (hence exhaust gas recirculation EGR). If you were having trouble with stuttering before replacing your EGR, then either you've picked up a dodgy EGR, a newer model (I've heard - unconfirmed - that newer EGRs require the ECU software updating) or you have a problem which when the EGR is recirculating causes your car to stutter and it's not necessarily a problem with the EGR itself.
Poor combustion will cause an increase in "dirty" exhaust gases, which can lead to poor performance when the EGR tries to re-use the dirty air.
Injector problems may be the cause of this - unfortunately they're not cheap to diagnose or replace.
    Any other ideas Members?!

No split pipe anywhere? Is the bottom edge or intercooler ok? (Known to disintegrate), what colour smoke?
Lots of smoke? Is MAF sensor ok and genuine?

Would a damaged pipe or intercooler be sorted by unplugging the EGR? Also wouldn't a faulty injector show up as a fault code?

Hi Mate - have you looked at http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showth...tation-read-on Appreciate this is slightly different than your problem - but have you checked the pipes that are connected to the Boost Control Sensor - there is a picture of the unit and where it is located in that post.
Also have you tried blanking the EGR off - using a 'holed' plate as opposed to a complete blank?

Your first question - No I would'nt think so - second- yes it would show up as a fault

have a read of this post this was from another member on here

I cleaned mine about 3 months ago after getting a how to from a vx mechanic friend of mine. I cleaned up the solenoid side and re greased and cleaned out the spring side with carb cleaner. It was running fine until about a month ago when the symptoms changed. My car started to judder a around 2000 and then 2500 rpm but only when accelerating slowly through the rev range. It was as though there was a misfire. Reading though our the forum it seemed as though it was the old 'injector No 3' wiring issue which a replaced a couple of weeks ago but this didn't fix the problem. The other thing i found herre was a possible injector problem but before I spent a few hundred quid on an injector I thought i'd check the EGR again. I discovered that the 'spring' side was sticking very slightly when depressed. It just didn't seem completely smooth, so, I cleaned it out again and greased the sleave that the bar runs through...... Success!! did this yesterday and my car is running smooth as kojaks head again!!

Could be a faulty EGR I fitted then?
I might clean up my old one and refit it to see if there's any difference.
    Thanks for all the info
