Auto box knowledge AF40?

Maybe it's time to resurrect this thread, as there are several people with problems in their AF40s.
There is a recurrent topic with coolant entering the gearbox, but seeing the pictures of the AF40 transmission oil cooler and its pipes I don't see where that could happen:

That thing seems like an oil-to-air cooler to me. Does any of you know what is different in an aftermarket oil cooler, as installed by many people?

The oil cooler is in the bottom of the radiator and has seals where it exits the radiator,these fail causing contamination of gearbox fluid and subsequent failure.

The AF40 Box is now fixed. Got the professionals to do it in the end. I consider the price to be fair, and there is no doubt about it, now its fixed there is a satisfaction which could never have been gained by scrapping it and buying another one.

Its returned to being the very comfortable responsive vehicle it was designed to be. I spoke to lots of people in the course of arriving at the course of action I took. In the end the car was away for about a week and I have a rebuilt gearbox, a new valvebody, a torque converter and a cooler and an 18month guarantee.

I went the independant specialist route, an the key point was that the people doing the work gave me confidence. They have returned the car valeted and I have never in my ownership had the car looking better. Comparing this to the idea I toyed with of getting a cheap alternative vehicle while I attempted to do it myself in my spare time and the reality is that the repair would have dragged on probably endlessly, working in less than ideal conditions and with a tool kit which would have needed expanding considerably to even have a chance.

Glad you got it sorted via a rebuild.

I had the early signs of this in my 1.9 Auto but got shot of the car before anything major happened.

Did they tell you what the actual cause of the box not functioning correctly?

However, I am looking at buying a Zafira Tourer which is fitted with the AF40 Box, does anybody know if they have rectified the issue within the radiator/oil cooler to prevent the coolant ingression?
