Eek Vectra C Gear Knob Came off!

My first post to the forum. I have owned a Vectra C from new for 5 years now and 60K miles. Generally speaking it has been a very reliable vehicle.

However I had a recent occurence where the manual box gear knob came loose. In all innocence off I went to the local Vauxhall dealers. Thinking to myself that as it was a push fit to a gear lever spline it would only be a replacement gear knob. After all the spline was not damaged and the only signs of wear were inside the gear knob. To my shock I was told that the gear knob does not come as a single item, you have to buy other associted parts which I was then quoted near on £300 to supply and fit!!

Has anybody had a similar experience, has this problem occurred in other vehicles and is there a less expensive way of making a permanent repair?

Doubtless to say I didn't take the dealer up on their kind offer and put in a temporary fix myself.

Or cut up an old rag and place over the spine and bang the knob down this should create a strong grip.

Thanks for the suggestions. What I did in the end was to wrap electrical tape around teh sple and then push the knob back on.
