Default tuning chips on ebay...any good?

Hi. Just been looking at the plug in tuning chips on ebay. Some are as cheap as £60. Of course they all promise more power but im more interested in increased MPG. Anyone had any experience with these cheapie chips?

Also are there any wise words of caution?

Any particular makes you where looking at? Quite a few people run tuning boxes on the CDTIs.

I'm exactly the same, I got my DTUK CRD2 for my Astra when I was using Astra Owners Network, which is now fitted to my Vectra. The AON site owner Andrew is also the owner of DTUK and the customer service has been second to none... the success of DTUK is also another reason why I trust using it. Without doing extensive research, I wouldn't put a cheap box onto my car... but then again I wouldn't fit any other type of tuning box on my car regardless of the price if I thought it would risk damaging the car.

My only suggestions are do your homework, you get what you pay for. Is there a reason why you want a box and not a remap?

thanks for the replies...have seen dtuk ones, thats the kind of feedback i wanted. I wasnt aware that re mapping would do the same thing, and hadnt given it any thought as that was one of the jobs done just before i bought it. Im more interested in mpg than power. Have any of you noticed an improvement. the adverts say 15-20%. Is that realistic? In all honesty 10% is another 4 or 5 miles per gallon, and i dont think thats to be sniffed at.

I have noticed a difference in mpg because it changes the way you drive, reaching the required speed quicker. however if you start booting it everywhere you soon notice the fuel meter dropping quicker than you'd like. Also the tuning boxes cause a slight change in accuracy in the OBC making the mpg readings slightly higher giving an unrepresentative reading of mpg so i normally knock of 5 mpg to get a more accurate reading. Still worth it though in my opinion, the fact that I've taken it off one car and fitted it to another makes it worthwhile for me so i don't have to pay for two remaps.

You mentioned that a remap was one of the jobs done before you bought it? So if the vehicle is already remapped then putting a tuning box ontop of that may cause you problems. I think it may have a detremantal effect on reliability.
