    Default Vectra strange clicking/scraping noise

    Hi all

    just noticed my car making a clicking or scraping noise that doesn't appear to be brake related.
    The noise sounds internal like differential area, I hear it more when I take my foot off the accelerator.

    Im convinced it's something to do with the driveshafts or cv joints etc, when I say clicking noise it's not like a clicking clock if you no what I mean. When I slow down the noise gets longer like you can hear it chaffing then not chaffing

    Any ideas? It's a taxi so down time is bad

    Ok

    Im off to scrappers tomorrow to get two new complete driveshafts, anyone know which ones fit or has it got to be a 1.8

    I've got a deep 32mm socket and assorted 1/2 sockets. I don't or can't find my ball joint separator, though I'd prefer to drop the lower control arm to remove shaft, is this method possible?

    Any help or suggestions appreciated


    The noise gets quieter when I press the clutch but is still there, why would the noise get quieter if it's drives shaft related?
    Could it be because the engine is becoming disconnected so not as much load on the joints etc?

    i think i have the same problem

    mine is 1.8 04 reg

    ive recentley had a mot and had a advisory it says

    nearside drag link end ball joint has slight play

    i also have the noise

    i will investigate soon

    Mmmmm would you be getting more of a knocking noise ?

    Mine is a constant clicking type noise that slows down with decrease in speed.

    Ok

    Went to scrap yard today and got 2 complete driveshafts off a petrol vectra but as there was no engine I don't know exactly what engine it was off

    Got the drivers side swapped over test drove and no difference as of yet.

    I did notice on the diff end of the shafts they had the same splines but the little swirly lines in the shaft were of a slightly different thickness, is this ok?

    Shaft went in fine and no leaks etc

    Also took the magnetic plug out near the passenger side inner cv joint and topped up the box oil but again this has done anything

    So it's either the passenger side shaft that will cure it or the problem has to be the box, diff or clutch arrangement ?

    I would really appreciate any advise or comments

    Hi

    You would have probably got better responses if more details were given in your first post, I know its a Vectra 1.8


    Giving advice on car noises is very difficult and without an actual recording/video clip etc of the problem most will shy away,
    unless a very good description of the fault is given in a way that makes some sense rather than ,
    "click or scraping but not scraping and not clicking like a clock" etc etc is useless to try to diagnose this description,
    although it makes perfect sense to you because you are experiencing it first hand and know exactly what your talking about.

    Now

    Any noises related to putting your foot on the clutch are going to be related to that area of the car.

    1. Damaged clutch assembly
    2. Excessive Crank shaft end float pushing crank pulley and belt into timing belt housing
    3. Damage to gearbox/differential.
    4. Damage to drive train.

    Is the noise there when stationery with the engine running moving in and out of the gears with the clutch down (obviously) ?

    Is the noise only there when in motion ?

    Is the noise worse in a straight line or cornering or the same constant noise doing both ?

    cheers mate

    i hear what your saying there

    car is a Vectra 53 plate 1.8 petrol 5 speed manual with 75000 alledged miles on the clock
    no service history given with car, cam belt done 12000 miles ago

    the noise is constant never missing a beat and only slowing down as the car slows down, it doesnt do it when stationary.

    im not confident that fitting the other shaft this weekend is going to remedy the problem, im familiar with outer cv noise and inners clunking when you set off but never heard of a ticking inner cv joint.

    also no gaurantee that the driveshaft i have fitted is a1 condition but it seemed tight enough. old shaft did have a split outer cv gaitor but still plents of grease in there so im ruling that one out as any thing to do with it

    it sound like it is coming from the centre of the car somewhere when sat in drivers seat, i think it is something to do with the box or associated parts.
    unless the other passenger driveshaft is shot and is the main cause??

    im hoping to use the car tomorrow but im unsure of the risk involved if i just stay local.

    i may pop to a local garage in the morning for an opinion on it

    i used to have a transit connect that had a dmf fitted and that was noisy as hell until i pushed the clutch in, dont know if this is a similar noise as i dont know if the vectra 1.8 has DMF, i suspect it doesnt due to it been a pretty gutless engine

    a) swirly lines are for oil distribution, therefore bigger will be ok.
    b) sounds like diff, milage is probably high as its a taxi and they arent the strongest diffs
    c) sounds stupid but there is a part number sticker on the driveshafts, if it starts to unpeel, can give you a similar noise as it catches something on its way round.
