    Default Gearbox drain plug leak

    Chaps,

So I have a slight weap on the gearbox drain plug it would seem on my CDTI 150 (F40 box)..

Now - I had a stuck drain plug that I had to chisel off - and wondering if the fact that it was done up so tight has stretched the thread in the box and therefore making it leak..

So - thinking of the best way that I can stop this leak.. its a new plug so its defo something a little more than the plug..

Thinking a good amount PTFE tape on the thread of the plug and around the washer may do the job?

    Any bright ideas / thoughts?

    Ant

    Default

PTFE, or some Loctite thread seal (not the thread lock) should sort it.

thats a point - not thought about the thread seal.. I bet that will be better than PTFE? as it will get everywhere and seal arond the washer etc.

Well - just had a very interesting chat with a tech at VX.
Went there to get a new plug (again) and spoke to the chap in parts that I always deal with and he said he remembered one of the guys talking about these.. Went to get him.

Basically long story short he says its quite common on those and its even more so when a plug has to be removed with force using a chisel - which again he says happens all the time.
Basically he recons that the surface that the plug mates too will be scored from the chisel and thats why its not sealing..

BUT - what they do at VX aparently which works is:

Get a new sump plug. Remove the washer that comes with the new plugs as thats just a soft metal washer. Wrap PTFE on the threads near the base of the plug and then use a engine sump plug washer as the washer as its just about the same size. Reason being is that they are a deeper washer so mate to more of the gearbox surface - plus (and importantly) they have a rubber seal in them that will form the seal on the neck of the drain hole!

He was 99.9% sure that there is enough space for the larger faced washer around the gearbox drain hole.

    Perfect solution if it works!!

    Watch this space......

    Makes perfect sense TBH..

Ill get it sealed - I just want to not have to use any sealant if possible.. PTFE tape is fine - and the washer with the rubber should be perfect!

Will let you all know when I do it.
