to look at my car (other than the massive keyed panel) you cant see swirls at all unless you look very close with a light but its other cars people have asked me to do so wouldnt want to damage them, also do you have to be careful of the laquer/clear coat when polishing

You will be fine with a DA. TBH the golden rule is never stop the polisher from moving, that's when damage to the paint can occur as it overheats. Get yourself a Das 6, Meguiars Polish pad and a Cutting pad, Meguiars Mirror Glaze #82 & 83, thats all you will ever need.

your right in what you are saying and TBH you would have to really mess up with a DA to burn through, all though it is possible. Marc have you had a PTG on your paint? I only ask as I also used my wifes car as a practice car but after about 1.5 years practice I have taken a lot of paint out of the car. We all think that a DA will be fine, but I have polished peoples cars with only 80 - 100 microns, which is not far from solid paint and if your not careful burn through can easily happen from what would be normal practice on any car with reasonable paint. Resprayed areas will also cause concern because you can't gauge how soft the paint is and sometimes you cant tell just by looking if an area has been resprayed. Dont be scared of using a DA just learn the facts about the paint your polishing first, if you have loads of it all over the car then go mental and practice till the cows come home.
