    Default Which mountain bike?

I've not ridden a bike for few years but have decided that now is as gooder time as any to tackle the growing waistline and take up cycling again but thought I'd ask for some opinions on my choice of steed before spending anything.

Ive got a budget of about £800 and am quite liking the 2012 Cannondale SL3 at £750 but wonder if there's anything else out there for similar money? Is the SL2 worth the extra £150?

They look good quite like the Acid (what an appropriate paint job).

Whats all this 29 inch stuff? Is one worth considering or is 26 better for getting back into it all?

I've discounted the cannonade as I've been reading bad things about RST suspension. I'm now down to Cube Acid, specialized rockhopper or kona cinder cone.

Have a look at Merida bikes, they are virtually bullet proof and come very well spec'd....

We got my wife a Canyon last year. Got the spec of a bike twice the price, delivered to your door. Really well-finished frame too and it rides very well, accelerates quickly and tight, well-controlled handling.

This morning I had settled on the Cube Acid but have found the Kona Cindercone on offer for £800 + £100 voucher for gear so am now thinking I might go for that.

    Bike ordered!!

I've gone for the Cube Acid in blue & grey:

Next one to consider is helmet and pedals? I think helmet will be dictated by budget so probably £35-40 on what ever the local bike shop has in but what about pedals? I'd like to be able to pop to the shops on my bike without having to put special shoes on so I'm not sure spd's would be a great choice just yet unless there's a halfway house? Is there even any benefit to being clipped into your pedals?
