    Default Strange issue??

    Hi everyone

Bit of a strange problem here but someone may be aware of it. When pulling up on the drive tonight the revs were up slightly and running generally a bit rough. My first thought was that it had started a regen but the MPG were as normal. I waited too see if the revs lowered but they didn't after 10 mins so I switched the engine off. When turning over the engine to start her again it was as if the battery was pretty much flat and she was extremely slow in turning over.the revs were normal but then climbed to around 1100 revs.I did notice that the swirl bar looks more loose than normal but it does move when revved. I can't quite see the connection between swirl bar and battery though. The battery is new this year and has been having slight drain after a couple of days but this problem today has completely thrown me. Help is greatly welcomed as can't use the wife's car as we have just had another baby and would like her to have use of her car in case of any emergencies.

Sounds like alternator, the car will increase revs if the alternator is failing to keep the car running. Check there is a min of 14 volts across the battery with the engine running.

Just checked the battery and she is only reading 11.6 volts so finger points to the alternator. These things must be made of cheese because it was new 3 years ago but last time it gave me the old spanner light.
Many thanks for your help looks like my lunch break tomorrow has vanished

Is that reading of 11.6 volts with the engine running? If so it does look like alternator.

Yes mate 11.6v when running. I will get a new one fitted tomorrow ~ if in the unlikely event it is not the alternator at least I have a spare to fit when it does eventually die ~ Which it will

Thanks mate, the car was flat as a witches tit this morning so i was about to order a new alternator but have been told by the local motor factors that there are 6 different alternators and 4 amp ratings. 100A , 105A , 121A & 140A. Now I`m guessing that it is the 105A but cant see the rating on it as I`m at work and the car is at home. Can anyone give any clues otherwise I will just take a punt at the 105A. Car is a Estate 55 plate 1.9 CDTI 150 ps.
