Default ABS fault when starting in the rain?

I only get this fault come up when the it has been raining or damp the previous night.

It goes away when I turn off the ignition and then restart.

In the dry I have no issues and know for a fact that the ABS does work... looking at the paperwork for the car, the whole ABS unit in the engine bay was replaced.

I'm thinking its either a dodgy sensor or loom? Any other suggestions or ideas?

Any ideas to fault find on this one?

Edit - Also does anyone know of any code readers that will read codes other than EML that arent ridiculous money?

The wiring plugs for the front wheel speed sensors - which are located under the front wheelarches - would be a prime suspect on an early Vectra. You have a newer Saab but they might still be worth a check. The rear ones are probably also worth a check while you're at it.

Your car is 2008 and so must be EOBD compliant so any EOBD compliant scanner should work with it. You just need to find one that covers the systems you want for a price you are willing to pay. Have a search on here for ideas of wait for some people to let you know their suggestions. I've got a pre-2004 diesel so I can only dream of EOBD.

Ok, so the first thing to do is check the connections under the wheel arches? I cant seem to find much about this on google, no one seems to have the problem intermittently.

Sounds like moisture or water is getting in somewhere, so I don't know Saabs and unless someone else can suggest something better, I'd be starting to look at the wiring connections in the ABS system and the wheel speed sensors themselves. Having the fault code(s) could potentially narrow down what you need to look at quite a lot.

Sounds very like a short developing. Exacerbated by damp conditions. I recently suffered this on my Vectra and it was the front left ABS electrical cable (2 connectors) that fits between the wheel hub and just prior to going up to the ABS plug in engine compartment. I pinpointed which corner of the car was faulty by using 'cough cough -com' diagnostic with laptop. I then gave to an auto electrician who diagnosed the cable as faulty within 5 minutes. New cable fitted and it has been perfect. Good luck.
