Default Odd fault on 1.9CDTi Signum

Been getting a weird fault on my 55plate 1.9Signum(120 not 150). Bear with me as it's a bit of a long one!

When I open her up in 1st and 2nd she accelerates away fine. But in 3rd as soon as I get to around 3500-3700RPM I lose power, the fault light comes on (car with a spanner thru it) and it won't rev past 3100. Sometimes it does it in 4th too. To clear it I have to pull over, turn the ignition off and restart it, it's then fine unless I hit 3500-3700rpm again. Also, the fault light is on when I start up but turns off after a few seconds. Fuel consumption has dropped off too, I used to get around 45mpg according to the trip, now I'm lucky to get 40mpg. Top speed has been affected too, as has acceleration in 5th and 6th, I'm lucky to get anything over 90mph now and when I do it takes forever to get there. Hills are a complete kliller, I'm having to work the gears from 6th to 4th to stay at a steady 75/80

I've had it in at my local mechanics but whenever they coonect up the fault finder it's not registering any fault.

Any ideas 'cos it's doing my head in now, every time I join a motorway I have to try and remember not to open it up too much on the slip road and ease up the revs slowly and change up earlier than I'd like to.

    HELP!!!!!!!!!

Heard someone with similar issues to this a couple of days ago and his was down to a perished vacuum pipe on the front of the engine.

Admittedly his is a 150bhp 16v but I think the vacuum piping is somewhat similar so worth a look.

Failing that might be worth checking/cleaning EGR valve, boost sensor and also see if the intercooler and hoses have not got any holes in them

How-to for cleaning EGR and Boost sensor - 1

How-to for cleaning EGR and Boost sensor - 2

    Poor performance check Boost/Vacuum hoses

Split Intercooler (where to look and what to look for)

Hopefully that should help point you in the right direction or at least eliminate some of the issues know to cause similar

Firstly though, I would check for any perished boost/vacuum hoses as that sound more like the problem

Hope that helps and good luck

Cheers, I've been looking around the forum a bit since posting the updated request and have been looking at the boost pipe replies. Been out and checked it and mine was well perished! Haven't got anything to change it with today, just some 5.5mm fuel hose that won't fit the other end from the bend, too big by far and I don't fancy using a jubilee clip on it. I'll pop in the motor factors I use tomorrow to see what they have.

I'll check the big hose in a minute.

Also decided to take it out for a test and see where in the rev range it failed in each gear and found that it goes "dead" at the following intervals:

Neutral. No problem, able to rev the nuts off it and annoy the neighbours!
1st gear. No problem, took it to the red line and no issues.
2nd gear. Just shy of the red line.
    3rd gear. 3700rpm
    4th gear. 3200rpm
    5th gear. 3200rpm
6th gear. Didn't do it but I was going a tad too fast and bottled it!

Fingers crossed it's the pipe, if not then it's in for a service soon with my tame mechanic, he can have a play with the EGR valve.

Sounds very much like the vacuum pipes to me. If you take the plastic engine cover off and stand in front of the car, you will see 2 narrow rubber pipes from a vacuum unit near the battery to a couple of solid pipe connections at the front of the engine. The left hand one in particular is susceptible to splitting on the elbow joint next to the solid pipe section. You may need to bend the rubber elbow to see the split, but guaranteed that this will chuck up an engine management light when you stick your foot down.

Received the new pipe from an ebay link I found on here, changed it and wala.........bingo bango.........sorted. Siggy accelerates away fine now, turbo kicks in, car speeds up. Happy.

I still have the car and spanner on starting but it switches off after a few seconds, I reckon I've had 2 faults here, 1 was the vacuum pipe (which I have now changed) and the glowplugs are needing a change, which thanks to a how 2 on here I am more than happy to attempt.

    Cheers for your advice folks.
