Default Air on on the way out?

Well after having my air on regassed twice it's now making loads of whirring and whooshing noise when it's on. The air comes out cold but you can hear a mechanical whirring that increased with engine speed and various whooshing and 'air gurgling' noise inside the car.

I assume it's the compressor on the way out? It's got warranty still but I doubt it's covered. Looking at compressors on eBay there not cheap!

Have you got a policy book of what's covered and what's exempt from the cover?

I would have thought it would be covered.

Its a typical warranty booklet - it lists exclusions (and the aircon system isn't mentioned at all!) but then states the list isn't a total list of exlcusions.

I guess I'll have to book it in and see, its getting noisier!

Just been told its leaking around the evaporator. Sounds like a major job - dashboard off by the sound of it?

Has anyone had this done on their Vec? Garage reckon they will need the car for a week to do it!

I wouldn't know much about the workings - mine's starting to make the noise described above, but I did the coward thing and turned up the tunes!

Well the noise only lasted a week or so before the aircon packed up again.

    Fellas,

My aircon compressor started making a noise (mechanical whirring), got worse over a couple of weeks. Had it re-gassed, quiet again for a week, then noise back twice as bad.

Shortly after that it stopped cooling and at tickover the compressor started sounding like a box of nails being shaken.

A little diagnostics with a friend/local independant specialist revealed that the compressor had failed, and when we removed the bumper to change it several patches of dye (mixed in with the oil/refrigerant to enable leaks to be detected) were clearly visible on the condenser finning. The condenser was perforated in at least 3 places.

Once condenser and compressor replaced and whole system re-gassed and oiled, all is well - almost completely silent operation and on cooling the icy blast coming from the vents inside is lovely on a hot day - problem fixed.

    But:

Compressor supply only £488 plus VAT
Condenser supply only £263 plus VAT

Will leave labour and fitting to your imagination but even doing half the work myself didn't leave much change out of £1k (no pocket money for me for at least the next year !!!!).

    Good luck,

    Signumv6man
