The VVT unit can make a light tapping noise when cold which is normal. But if it makes a loud rattle / tapping noise for about 2-6 seconds on start up but then goes away, the solution is to take off the filters/gauze from both the VVT actuators.
Easy job to do, but it will cure ONLY the loud 2-6 second rattle as the blocked gauze/filters starve the top end of oil.

    Hope this helps your query

That does not sound right at all. Is the knocking coming from the top of the engine?- I guess it is filled to the correct oil level now? But that noise sounds like a serious oil starvation at the top end. Have you run the car at normal speed / revs this would normally get the oil flowing around the top end? Does the oil pressure light go out after a few secs after starting the car up?

If all above is "yes" I'm not sure what it could be, I'm no expert on VVT specifics and my 58 VVT does tap a bit at cold idle but goes when egine is warm - heres hoping it is not more serious -I will have a think of other things it could be -

The VVT Can knock all the time if permanent damage is done.
There is some videos on YouTube about this in fact. The Cams get starved of oil, and it knocks on startup. This gets progressively worse until it's there all the time.... and then the internals give up.

Firstly remove the Cam Pulley top cover (2 bolts) fire up the engine and verify if the knocking is from there. It could be some thing else of course, but if it's the VVT System then thats is where the noise will be from.

It sounds to me like the pulleys are stuffed but I could be wrong. The VVT mechanism runs on oil pressure and without it, it does knock. But she shouldn't knock all the time. it'll go away after 1-2 seconds from cold start followed by the oil light a couple of seconds later.
