Default What is the moral of this sad story

Well, having a garage full of asssorted crap after a clear out, I decided to let my local garage do an oil and filter, the first time I havent done it myself for hmmmmm, a long time.
They promised to call when it was done, and I left them 5 litres of 5/30 and a filter and off I went.
By 1 oclock I thought I would ring to see if it was done, and they said yes, pick it up when you are ready.
Well walking up the hill to the garage, I spotted my car, and had a quick look, hmmmmm whats that oil leak doing there?!
called in and the "mechanic" who looked about 12, mumbled something about it being like that when I brought it in????
saw the manager who said there was a leak from the sump plug, but dont worry give us 10 -15 minutes and we will re-do it and fit a copper washer....argh.
Picked it up later drove to my wifes work, and back home, my wife gets out and said " theres smoke coming from under the bonnet!,opened it up and sure enough lots of smoke, looks like the monkey got oil everywhere, on the manifold, etc not good with a hot engine.
So I guess the moral is, do it yourself?

This is typical of most garages today, particularly dealers. They let the trainee do basic servicing, nothing wrong with that, they have to learn the trade somehow, but, a senior mechanic should be checking there work before the car is handed back to the customer and very often this just doesn't happen. Methinks a strongly worded letter to the managing director or owner of this garage is in order. Lets face it, if they can't get a basic oil change right, what chance do we have with the bigger things?

i would go in and see the manager and make them scrub the oil off with a damp cloth.

They will probably make the trainee lick it off and he will make a balls up of that!

Yep! It's a real pain. You can be sure that any garage will use the apprentice/trainee for basic servicing jobs 'cos it's cheaper and he has to learn somehow. Trouble is that you can't be sure he's done it properly. I only take my car to a 1-man business that I know well, that way I know who's done the work and how well it's likely to be done.

Agree - but that's not the idea of an apprenticeship - it is to train youngsters a skill/trade but they should be working alongside a skilled mechanic and not left to their own devices - when they get to the stage that they can work unsupervised every bit of work they do should be scrutinised to ensure it has been done correctly.
As you say unfortunatly they are used as cheap labour in some garages.
