    Default Changing spark plugs 2.8T

Right guys, my car has started to hesitate/judder when flooring the fun pedal. This started to happen the day after I had read Spoons write up about VXR's and it seems its a common problem with the coil packs failing.

Ahter having a quick chat with Steve about it, he has advised that I check the gapping on my plugs before I go shelling out on coil packs. This makes absolute sense.

Now I'm not a complete numpty when it comes to cars but I'm no mechanic either, I have been trying to find out about the location of the plugs but can't seem to find any info. All I keep finding is that its a right pig of a job.

    Can anybody shed any light.

    Thanks
    Kev

Hey Kev. Me and Dean (Plasma) Changed the plugs in your car back in Feb 2011. I uprated them to NGK Iridiums so there is no way they should need changing in that little time, but as you say they could need regapping now. It was a pig of a job as you say as the rear plugs are covered by the inlet manifold iirc and there are fuel pipes etc that need moving. You also want to make sure you disconnect the battery as you'll need to remove a connector to the ecu and you don't want to be damaging that. Have a look over on VXRonline I'm sure there are a couple of guides on there mate. Or ask Plasma and see if he can remember more than me.

    Cheers

    H

Thanks Howard for the heads up about the battery and ecu. I'm gonna have a crack at them tomorrow afternoon, If I get stuck I'll drop Dean a PM to test his memory

Ive done these a few times now.. Last one was chrisvectra's VXR..

As above you will need to remove the upper inlet and the various hoses and connections around it.. Its not difficult - just remember where it all goes and you will be fine.

Well I'm feeling rather pleased with myself now. Just finished taking all the plugs out to check the gapping. What a proper pain in the backside tho to do on a 2.8T. Did it in 2.5 -3 hrs not bad for a first time. Been out for a quick blast, car feels more responsive and so far no juddering/hesitation. About 4 of the plugs were 0.1mm out. lets home it sorts the problem. Thanks to Spoons and Porkballs29 for the advice.

i guess time will tell if that has sorted the problem or whether I need to shell out for coil packs.

Are the plugs single electrode in the 2.8 then?

I was always told never to regap multi electrode plugs as you'll never get the gaps all the same distance and as the spark will always travel across the shortest distance you'll prematurely wear out hte plugs.

The NGK ones that were in were single electrode.

Well the dreaded EML came on today and car is running on 5 cylinders, Had to limp it home 20 miles. Got 3 new coil packs ordered so hopefully once they are done, it'll be happy motoring.
