    Default Wireless Access Point/Networking Question...

Downstairs I have my modem/router and a laptop connected wirelessly to the modem/router.

Upstairs I have just added a dektop which is connected wirelessly to the modem/router - signal strength is fair.

I also have a networkable printer, that was until recently connected striaght into the back of the modem/router via a cable. The printer has moved upstairs, so this in no longer possible (modem/router is downstairs).

Can I use a wireless access point upstairs, to...
    a) connect the printer back into the network (cable from back of printer into wireless access port) and
    b) improve the wireless signal upstairs?

    I was thinking of this...

Other suggestions on how to do this welcome (I am aware of powerline as an alternative option, but the above seems much cheaper as a solution!)

No idea about the extender mate, but I can recommend the power line adapters - got my dad a couple for his birthday and they work brilliantly...

Random question - how did you get on with the brakes in the end...?

    Brakes are great thanks mate.

Powerline adaptors I am somewhat tempted by, but not taken on the fact that they 'steal' a power socket, so one machine needs two power sockets, two machines need four, whic is all the sockets in the room! Plus, I am not solving the root of the problem - poor wireless connectivity upstairs; it will still be poor for any future devices. (not to mention the acces point is dirt-cheap!)

    Default

You can get Powerline adaptors with a pass-through mains socket on them so you don't lose one if you shop around. For example.

Pairs you get are pre-configured as master and slave so you could buy multiple pairs and each pair would - by default - ignore the other pairs and operate as point-to-point links. However if you buy them all the same (so they all use the same technology standard), you can re-configure them all to talk to each other by resetting all except 1 of them, putting the remaining one (the master) into 'learning/broadcast mode' then getting all of the other others to associate themselves with it.
