Default Steering wheel light & loss of power steering

Got the car back from the garage and took it out for the first time. Started it up and the steering wheel symbol came on but went off after a minute

Drove the car about 20 miles, parked it up for an hour. Got back into the car the steering wheel light had gone back on and it was obvious there was no power steering.

Drove it for another 10 miles and then suddenly it went off and I got power steering back. It was then ok for the next 15 odd miles.

Anyone had this? Car has never done this before and looking under the bonnet I can't see anything obvious

What work were the garage carrying out?

What is happening to yours, is very similar to what happened to mine at the beginning of this year
It switched off once but was fine the day afterwards
The following day it was dead

Have you checked the power steering level?
Sounds like the power steering level sensor is at the end of its life, and needs to be programmed out (unless you can find a cheap working replacement, as new ones are not available)

The dealership I use tried that, but it made no difference
They fitted a new pump, but that too did not work
It tuned out the new pump was also faulty

is the battery ok ...alternator charging it up ?
the power steering takes alot of juice so if battery no good then that might be a problem ..other faults are the steering rack itself leaking, also pump and of course fluid levels .

    Depends on engine
(not in your profile) I guess you have a 2.0T so it should be underneath the offside front headlamp, if it is not obvious at the back of the engine bay (beside the Brake Fluid reservoir)
    Access is very poor
If you are just inspecting the level, remove the screws from the bumper
However for topping up, remove the wheel and liner
