    Unhappy Burning oil? Help. Panicking.

For a while I have had a very small leak or so I thought. I have had a little bit of oil on my dive and have had to top up every 500 miles or so. I've changed crankshaft seal and next I was going to do the timing chain cover gasket.

On occasion I have had a very small bit of smoke out the back when under hard acceleration but hardly noticeable.

Today my oil light came on so I bought some castrol fully synthetic and put it in. Since then my car is smoking a lot all the time while driving normally. So I am a bit worried.
What do you think? Valve seals? Pistons? What does this in tale and cost by garage or yourself. Any checks that can be done?

Sorry for the long post. This is all I need at the mo. it's a 2.2 direct 2004. Cheers all.

Its not a leak thats leaking onto your exhaust and then burning and you are seeing it come under the car is it?

    Defo coming out the pipe?

Generally once the oil lights on the damage has already been done, if its not leaking it and deffernatly burning it, can only be piston rings or valve stem seals, parts arn't that expensive its the labout that will bump the price up

If its smoking all time an burning oil if be suspecting piston rings.

Perform a compression test dry then give each cylinder a squirt of oil an reperform compression
    what are the differences?

Piston rings is a large job an I would say around 10 hours labour from a garage.

Its not a bad job if your capable of doing it yourself however You will need to look for cylinder wall damage

It smokes when revved stationary. Only since I put the new castrol oil in. Before that it was fine. I was using own brand oil from gsf etc. Is there any small thing I can check for / do to confirm its the seals / pistons. How much would I be looking at for that type of work from a garage. Or where would u get seals or pistons from. I have a friend who used to be amechanic but not sure he would like to this size of a job.

IMO it would be cheaper to source a new engine an swap it.
As o say it's a big job to change piston rings.

The head needs to come off. Along with sump

Thr actual piston ring price with be fairly cheap it's the others that bump up price ie.
Headgasket set timing belt etc etc

its also worth considering if your doing piston rings to do valve stem seals at same time.

Paying a garage labour fees will be insane price.

Perhaps find someone local that will do it over a weekend/ few evenings for cash in hand.

Looks like I'm in deep doodoo. Don't have the money for any of this at the moment. Why would it get so bad after putting different oil in? What can happen if I keep driving it. I don't have any choice at all. Need to work. Major bummer. Anyone fancy a pvt job? Lol

Same viscosity oil? How long since last oil change?

Any flushing agents used? Providing you keep oil upto level

Make sure check each time before driving.
Engine damage should be to a minimum. You could damage the cat but providing you don't cover thousands of miles in this condition you should be ok.

Saying that I had a Zafira that burned 5 litres of oil over about 6/700 miles an I drove that just topping up oil for 8000 miles with no dramas

If you were closer I'd do the work for you.

Try ringing local garages some of the smaller quieter places might do it for a good price if their in need of work

I done an oil change, spark plugs and filter in April. I use the car daily to commute to work. 200 miles plus per week. I couldn't tell you if it was the same viscosity oil. What effect would this have. I will try and top up oil every few days. Never used any agents.
