confused EGR Valve: removed but looks like new!

Hi, not sure this is what i was expecting when I removed the EGR valve but it is pristine. So clean it doesn't look as if it's been used/working. Any suggestions. I have similar issues at sub 2000 RPM as stated in many of the topics so i was amaised to see it un-coked. The rest of the valve, inlet manifold and boost sensor was fully sooted up. As a background on the vehicle it is the 1.9 cdti 150 06 reg. I have only had the car since feb and I don't have any detailed service history, only stamps from an ind. garage (who ive contacted for history). So not sure if the EGR has been changed/ replaced. I have recently found a cheaper garage, the ind sort but i'm now concerned it may be dirtty fuel, any way to tell. I don't have access to a code reader would it be worth dropping into a stealers to get the diagnostics checked out. DPF saturation levels etc? I've had no warning lights or such just a rough searching idle and rough through the lower revs, some times verging on stalling when pulling away. Similar feeling to a petrol firing on three cylinders. Any advice/ abuse warmly welcomed. Cheers Ewen

Is the solenoid firing as it should? from your description it could be the thing isn't opening.

As an aside last time I cleaned mine it too was only very slightly sooty I do a mix of 25% congested town 75% motorway in my car.

Hi Derek, that was what I was thinking but do you know if there is any way to tell other than diagnostics?
Do you know if the solenoid can be manually fired to test it?
There was no soot on it at all.
I do similar driving and last week had two runs where i stayed in 4th and ran at 3500 for a good run, hoping to clear out the dpf. Prior to that ive been cruising at 2000 rpm to conserve fuel.
In the last month Ive changed teh fuel filter, oil and filter.
I've also got some BG244 to run through the system as well.

Take the solenoid off and fire the pin with a 12V connection, or, take it apart as per the How2 on here and clean / lube the throw shaft or, just throw some money at it and get one off ebay then you can butcher up the old one and sell it on after

If it hasn't been working - be the sounds of it staying closed then you wouldn't get the flat spot under 2,000rpm. This is due to the valve staying closed and maintaining boost in the exhaust manifold. Tbh it probably is working as there is a good chance the emissions light would have came on if the valve was jammed closed.

    Eek

Just dug this out of the channels running from the EGR valve into the inlet manifold. Guess it was restricting the flow of exhaust gasses!

Gonna run some BG244 through it next week hopefully that will sort it. Only thing left to do I think would be DPF-clean, new air filter just thought not changed that. And only other thing would be a diagnostics check but no warning light.
