56 plate cdti 120 cold and poor starting

Hi all im knew to all this, and until very recently had no problems then had a new egr at xmas ( I GOT RIPPED OFF ) then a new alternator ! ,I now have the following problem if the cars is stood overnight it takes 10-20 seconds to start it before it finally starts in a plume of smoke then it runs fine until its left for a while, it also feels as though its not performing right, ive looked at the other posts and looked under the bonnet but im lost as to the cause can anyone help in pointing me tot he right thread or advice

How are your glow plugs when where they last changed when did last change your fuel filter.
You say u have had a new alternator have you checked your battery.

Seems as though it could be a multitude of things with the CDTi's

1. Battery not holding enough charge (Replace)
2. Starter motor getting slow (Dual Mass Flywheel metal filings blocking it up)
3. Leak-off pipes
4. Check all Vacuum pipes all over engine for perishing
5. Glowplugs or even Glowplug relay
6. Alternator (You've already changed that)
7. Fuel filter
8. Fuel filter housing (known to crack and allow air into fuel supply)
9. Fuel pipes on top of filter (Blue clips known to work loose/break)
10. Injectors requiring refurb or replacement
11. If you've had a newer EGR fitted the 8v 120 may need an ECU software update (Field Remedy 2149)

I have done most of these things except replace injectors, replace DMF and starter motor but still have intermittent starting issues

my cdti 150 used to be hard to start until i replaced the cam sensor.
