    Angry Rip off garages

I have recently had a new rear bumper and some very minor damage repaired at a local bodyshop.
The work done is very very good.
However a knocking noise has started when I drive over a speedbump or up a kerb.
The knocking is from the nearside rear.
I took the car (04 gsi) back to the garage, where upon inspection I was shown a rear suspension arm bush was the cause.
They said they would phone me with a price.
I called a mate who is a vauxhall mechanic, he said not a big job he will change both sides £90 all in.
The garage phoned me back and said it is a big job?
They said with 10% off as a repeat customer (oh yeah aswell I returned an inspection lamp left in my car worth £40) they wanted £344!!!! WTF
I realise they are a business but its the S**T they try and tell you, big job etc.
Needless too say my mates doing it.

Never accept the first quote, unless you know roughly what something is going to cost
The problem here is you are comparing mates rates against company rates
Assuming you have the part number, phone a dealership and ask how much to replace both sides (remember with suspension always replace both sides on a like-for-like basis)

I use the Good Garage Scheme when looking for good garages with reviews, it's a lot safer than fishing for a good one on your lonesome

What can look as a big job to one garage, can be routine for another (if they have experience of doing it before)

    As an example
I was quoted 8 hours for a job once
The receipt had just 1.5 hours labour
After I made payment, I asked why the big discrepancy
"Yes, TIS gives 8 hours, but we noticed it would just be possible to disconnect, swivel (rotate) the part, and drop it out, although it does catch and scrape, but there is no damage as that is just a panel; no need to strip all the components above to get to it"

Makes me wonder about this diagnosis and part name
I had this, and it was the rear anti-roll bar bushes (and the VX mate is probably aware of this)
However, if the wrong part name (rear suspension arm) has been quoted to the local parts department, it is no surprise the cost is so high!
As above, it is just the bush itself

It is the curved arm and the bush aswell.
The parts are £44 for non genuine.
    So the bits are reasonable.
However they have done an exellent job with my bumper.
Just think their price is way too high.

Vx arms cost approx £70 quid or so a side. So look like the garage would be charging £200 labour, £100 per hour?? if each side is allowed for an hour to do.
