    confused EML Limp Mode. Help!!

I have had the spanner light on for the first five minutes of every journey for about a year now. So after reading the posts on this site it seems to be a common problem, being the glow plugs. It was not having any problems starting in the winter but I though I would change them anyway for what it coat £40.95 for Bosch Duratherm plus £100 for a new socket set that I figured I couldn't live without to do the job. Anyway while I was at it I thought I would try the £1 fix of the bar that links all the swirl things together, seemed to all go well, apart from being fiddly. Anyway after 20 minutes with battery off still had spanner on after reconnection, so left it an hour. Now on restart, spanner light has gone but engine management light is on and car has gone into limp mode.

I have got a code reader or opcom access so can anyone shed any light on the subject, I am thinking of pulling bar off.

    Thanks in advance

Are you sure this is the Engine Management Light?
I thought it was, but turned out it is the Emissions (warning) light

Its the orange one in the outline of an engine and revs won't go above 3250 and its like a 1 litre diesel.

Try disconnecting the EGR electrical connector and see if it drives any better. The EML light will be on but see if it is still in limpy mode. If the car drives well with the EGR disconnected, it is the EGR causing problems. Also, I have read in the handbook somewhere that after a battery disconnect, you are supposed to leave it in ignition on mode for 20 or 30 seconds before firing up. Is there now an air leak with the new Glowplugs?

Yes, it is not the Engine warning light, it is the Emissions Warning light
This suggests either the EGR valve or Lambda sensor

In the short term, you can normally resolve this by restarting the engine a few times or waiting a few days
Safe Mode will then cancel, the warning light will stay on, but eventually go out

The EMS may receive a warning in future, and what starts off as an erratic fault will become permanent as the part wears out / fails

Thanks for that, just wondering if connecting the swirl pots has thrown this fault up. I have not pulled the bar off, think the second one was perhaps a little stiff for the actuator.

I just want to drive home now. Did the work at my parents house in case things went wrong and I needed a lift to get parts.

I need to buy a fault reader really, does anyone know if the RAC one in Argos at 89.99 is any good? I know ebay is probably best bet but with the bank holiday weekend I could really do with getting it sorted.

I can't help any further as we have different engines, but having suffered this issue for the first time this week, looks the same as every time a fault is recognised for the first time (warning, safe mode, warning, clear, then repeats)

You should be able to complete a few journeys
However, if the Emissions Warning Light starts to FLASH - STOP, do NOT drive any further

Well after pulling the bar off and reconnecting the battery, and waiting thirty seconds on acc before starting the spanner light went out, but still had warning light. Revved engine and it went well past 4000, so I took it for a spin. Was back to normal. Did what you suggested and turned ignition on and off a few times. Simulation getting out of the car and locked it, then pretended to get back in and voila, all lights out. Drives great and hopefully that id the end to the spanner light first thing and hopefully emission warning will not come on again. I have only recently cleaned EGR out (and my eye) with carb cleaner. May consider replacing it at some point and installing Fiat gaskets. The swirl connecting rod is somewhere down the garden now.

Thanks for your assistance, still considering a code reader though.
