confused Do speed cameras sometimes false trigger?

This morning I was driving along a bit of 40 limit dual-carriageway which has a speed camera on. I know the road very well so knew of the camera, as well getting a warning from my TomTom. So I just checked my speed and was doing 40/41 mph on my speedo and around 37/38mph on the GPS.

Happened to look in my side mirror just as I had passed the camera (and was in the road markings section) and was somewhat surprised to see the camera do it's double flash!! I double checked that they hadn't recently reduced the limit and not posted up any signs to warn you but no, it was still 40mph.

There were some cars passing from the other direction as it flashed, but I thought it'd be highly unlikely that it picked them up since it was dual-carriageway with a bit of a central reservation/kerb thing.

I'm not worried about it. If the camera has falsely triggered and I somehow end up getting a NIP in the post, it will be extremely easy to show that I wasn't speeding due to the road markings and the two different frames.

Just wondered - do cameras do some sort of 'test' or random flash thing now and again as a car passes by? Why would it have flashed when I was certainly not speeding? It was definitely a double flash, not just a single.

They can do false flashes. I've seen the camera near my house flash with no cars about and several years ago I saw a bloke get flashed in bumper to bumper traffic doing about 5mph. Cars on the other side of the road can set off the camera too, though I think that's unlikely on a duel carriageway with a central reservation.

    I wouldn't worry too much.

might be worth contacting your local safety camera partnership office just to mention it to them.

your local magistrates court will give you the number if you cant find it listed.

Good idea Nick - curious as to what they say. Just sent an e-mail via their website - they don't list a number.

Yeah, these new cameras go by "how fast your car looks"..... so its not the actual speed they are interested in. It must have spotted your Signum and couldnt help itself !! Snap, Snap, Ker-Ching !!

    They certainly do.
I used to use an interactive paging system, called "Cognito" in my last job. When the aerials went a bit dodgy, they would trigger Gatso cameras, crash PC's all sorts. I was once stuck on the A312 by Heathrow in a jam for an hour, and I must have fired that thing a hundred times........

That's why they have to have road markings.

There are some that do 'traffic monitoring'. I had exactly the same experience once. Not sure exactly what's being achieved though!
