Performance in terms of in-gear acceleration is quite similar the 1.8 has to be worked and revved much harder though, the decisive factor comes from the purchase price the 1.8 petrol is worth less to buy the saving can be offset to the lower fuel economy it can be about £1,000 per car which will take a heck of a long time to break even on a 1.9 CDTi

I do not have stats but when I bought my 150 CDTi over 6 years ago, I first test drove the 1.8vvt. Followed minutes later by a same year 150. The 150 put a big smile on my face and bought it. The 1.8 did nothing for me. The 150 was in standard tune at that point. Once remapped, my smile got bigger.

I have to agree with your findings the diesel has many appealing attributes over the 1.8 petrol having driven both for many years as rentals I was always more excited when I saw the keyfob said "Diesel" however, and still adore it.

The 150 feels faster even than the 2.2i direct, despite book figures being about identical. 150 has far more grunt and overtaking will be a doddle in comparison.

I would add you driving type should be considered. If you are driving around town and doing low mileage I would get the 1.8 petrol, higher mileage go for the diesel. The diesel will need to be run warm as this should remove the possibility of some of the nasty faults. Loads of scare sotries on here, but my two 150s have been faultless and always run for over half an hour on daily long journeys.
