    Default Window tints

Having recently purchased a Black 3.2 Elite, I decided to have the windows tinted and after ringing around settled for a quote of £270 from Pentagon Glass Tech in Heywood. I chose Midnight for all the windows from the B pillar back with light smoke to the two windows forward of the B pillar and although not entirely legal looks aesthetically pleasing. Took my daughter to the cinema last night and on the way home looked in the rear view mirror to see Plod flashing blue lights! Pulled over to face the "music" and yes he wasn't impressed and handed over a £30 fixed penalty So much for Aesthetically Pleasing then!

If it's from the B pillar back, they can be as black as you like

they can only fine you for tints on the front windows

if you don't have tints fitted to the fronts I would be contacting your local station as their taking the p1ss m8

I've asked the Administrator to edit my original thread to include the text "and light smoke to the two windows forward of the B pillars"

Mustn't type these rants at work in-between jobs as obviously I'm not concentrating on what I'm writing!

    Sorry for the confusion!

Did they use a light meter to determine that they weren't legal, or did he just make a decision that they weren't legal? I thought they had to use a meter to be able to do anything?

I think now that any tint on the front is illegal except factory tints, so if there is a tint applied they know it`s illegal. Some are making you remove them at the roadside as well !!

Yep, since the factory glass is usually tinted to around the minimum 70% transmission, any tint film will usually make it illegal - but I still thought they had to measure it to prove it? Even if you admitted that you had a tint on the front, I wouldn't think they could automatically do you? What if the factory tint was a lot more then the 70% minimum allowed and a very light tint didn't make it illegal?

Yes he did use a light meter, with the light smoke on the fronts, if I can remember rightly they measured around the 40-45%
Apparently >45% but <70% gets a verbal warning
    <45% down to 30% is a fixed £30 penalty
and if they measure <30% the car is served with a prohibition notice and towed!

    best find my cheque book.....

How unlucky are you 70% is the limit on the fronts, i was warned about mine i had 50% front and back and rear window of 10%(~the person fitting it) and touch wood in the last two years its never been a problem.
I have never been pulled over for it. Mind you driving around at one in the morning with all ya windows down does get a little cold at times
