    Default egr valve

is it possible that the egr valve gets dirty, turns on the eml and then after driving it like that for a few days the valve gets more blocked and stops the car from being driven?

the car was on the way to garage to replace egr valve under warranty but has broken down and is being recovered.

i am hoping cleaning the egr valve will solve the issue?

Cleaning the egr valve will certainly help , but what fault codes were generated to make you think it was the egr apart from the garage telling you it is .
You have watch out with stealers as its one of there favourite ploys to tell you something is faulty , then you end up forking out for a new component only to find a couple of days later that was not the problem at all .

i didnt manage to do the pedal test tbh so its based on what the garage told me but as i have never cleaned the egr it could well be right.

i guess the best thing to do is clean the egr valve, bolt it back on and see what if anything has changed.

i will also try this pedal test i think

and the egr valve was to be replaced under warranty so i wasnt forking out for it anyway but i know what you mean.

i am going to get a code reader, wont bother with the garage again

Jps just ask on the forum if there is someone near you with a tech2 or vaux com .
Who is willing to read your codes at least then you will know what is required .

not a bad idea actuall, i have ordered a code reader from amazon but that wont be here till next week.

first job tho as its so easy and may wel fix the problem is to clean the egr valve i think.

they also said there was a fault code for glow plugs showing but diesels will fire on 1 or 2 so they cant be that bad but will be repalced asap as i have no idea when they were last done anyway

update, the pedal test doesnt seem to work, the eml is just on constantly.

took the egr off, it was disgusting, i was able to scrape chunks of soot out! gave it a good clean and put it back on with the original gaskets as i cant find anyone with new ones in stock yet.

the car does now drive at least which is an improvement on earlier.

a couple of questions, the eml is still on and that is keeping the car in limp home mode, can it be turned off without a code reader?

also, why doesnt the pedal test work, any ideas? brake and accelerator pressed, ignition on, i just get eml on not flashing.

Have you tried just disconnecting the battery for 10 mins or so, should clear the fault from the ECU, but the EML will come back on if the fault is actually still there.
