    confused Help!!!!

Hi there i am new to the forum,

Well the other day, i disconnected the battery to reset the ECU.....but i disconnected and reconnected the live and not the earth, which i have since realized is the wrong thing to do!!!!

Well now my battery is dead and i just get the clicking when i try to start the car, i had the RAC out who jump started the car and said that my battery was fried, the battery has stopped holding the charge, I'm guessing i did that?

Anyway just wanted to know is that all i did as it seemed the car ticked over fine when the RAC man started it, everything electrical worked and he said the alternator was blasting out enough to charge the battery but it just wasn't holding it, so i have fried the battery? Could i have knocked out a fuse that is stopping the battery from charging?

By the way my car is a 2004 1.9CDTI vec............advice please??

A dead battery will take longer than 3 hours to charge (unless on a boost pack)

ps, putting "help" as a subject header is about as vague title as you can get. Try to give people a clue to as what the question is - might get you more visits from people who could assist.

Cuz i thought it would get rid of the fault codes that showed up when the RAC bloke ran the diagnostic machine on it, i don't know what the reading off the battery was cuz it was a few days ago now but the RAC man told me it wouldn't hold a charge even if i dragged it a couple of junctions down the M5, but that means nothing to me as they said the same last time my battery went pear shaped on a 407 i had and i drove it around for an hour or so and hey presto it started in the morning.
This time though i aint so sure as like i said i only disconnected the live wire so i may have fried it?

It doesnt matter which side you disconnect as there will be no circuit?

Maybe your problems were with a failing battery??

Agreed - I have disconnected batteries both ways with no issues.

Your battery was probably on it's last legs anyway. If it was dipping below the minimum voltage required to run some circuits, then sometimes the CANbus communication is affected, and spurious fault codes pop up from all over the place.

Regarding fault codes... If the spanner symbol ain't staying on more than a few seconds after start-up, and it ain't coming on whilst you are driving, then I would not worry about the codes.

Mine has had a fault logged since the day it left the factory 7 years ago... no amount of clearing the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) will sort it... the car runs perfect by the way.

If the car runs fine, and the spanner light is not on whilst you are driving, then just chill out as there is no problem to worry about.
