Default 1.9cdti Cambelt Change - 'Top Dead Centre' Question...

This coming weekends job is cambelt & water pump change!

The only thing that I am not certain on is finding 'Top-Dead-Centre' on cylinder no. 1.

I intend to mark everything up with tippex - pulley position relative to belt and belt & pulley position relative to point(s) on engine. I intend to line the camshaft pulley up with the markings on the engine too (I dont think there are crankshaft markings on the 120 engine)

So my question is therefore ..

    a) does TDC really matter - if all you are esentially doing is taking the belt of and putting a new one on (and nothing moves in the process) then is this just a red herring?

    b) if you want to find TDC on a derv without pulling things half the motor apart, how?

Thanks in advance (N.B. this is the 120 engine FWIW)

As lee said, Not essential to find TDC. But make sure you mark it up well
