Default Clarkson is talking out his ****

    Hi all

I just gave up a very nice 2010 Audi A4 TDI company car as I have started my own business, and needed a good reliable car to get to meetings etc.

I saw the Vectra offered good value and although not a car I had considered given the bad press I ended up with a mint '06 1.8vvt Exclusiv. I have to say this car is absolutely the equal of the Audi, and is actually quieter and seems more refined. Ok, not a race car but 99% of 'ordinary' cars are neither interesting or exciting - I include BMW, Audi & Merc in that.

Even my neighbour said "what have you got that for"... he drives a Golf, which is the roughest sounding, cheaply made car I have ever been in.

Why do people have an issue with the mighty Vectra?!

I don't think it's so much about the Vectra as it is about General Motors. It ultimately doesn't matter what car you drive, but what car in the Mondeo/Vectra class is an absolute stunner? Not many. It really comes down to taste but I never thought the Vec was a bad motor, certainly not the worst by a long shot.

Very true mate they are very good cars and underaited. I traded in an Audi a4 Quattro sport for my v6 signum Ye the Audi interiors are nice but is no match to the comfort of my signum and did not have the refinement either btw Wellcome to the forum

    Thanks!

    Yeah but the interior is very 'German' in the Vec and during 50k miles in the Audi the interior had;

    Wind noise from drivers window
    Broken glovebox
    Stereo died
    Many, MANY rattles

Looks nice though! It does annoy me the amount of badge snobbery there is, actually driving a GM or Ford is much cooler than being a badge whore

Unless you have an M3 or AMG few cars of this class blow your head off. I'm not being lectured by a man in a Golf TDI

Welcome along, I'm on my second vectra, and the value for money was unbeatable. I've a 58 reg 1.8vvt, and for what i paid i was looking at a similarly specced mondeo same age same mileage, £3000 more though. Previously I had a 55reg 1.9 cdti.
Nothing comes close to matching the value for money of Vauxhalls, and in all honesty they are decent reliable cars.

Yeah agreed, I was looking at around £7k for a Mondeo but got my Vec for £4k - unreal! It's only done 31k miles, not a mark on it, full history. Really chuffed!

Same as my new one, 58 reg, 30k, couple of marks but not visible unless looking for them neither any bigger than a 5pence piece, and i paid £4995 was looking at 8-9k for same age mondeo. Only other thing i seen comparable to vectra prices and spec was a Cherolet Lacetti estate.

It has been well documented as to why Mr Clarkson, a television presenter for the BBC, doesn't like and never has liked the Vectra

It started with his first review of the Cavalier (Vectra A)
It was dull and bland, compared to what the other manufacturers were offering at the time

This was transposed to his opinion in the Vectra B
However he did later review a SRi and commented how different suspension and handling felt, but that was the only redeeming feature he found
This lack of enthusiasm was extended to the other offerings from Vauxhall

This continued with the Vectra C
However, when he reviewed the VXR against the BMW M5, he admitted the VXR won hands down on all but the handling (which is rather odd)
As for his review of the VXR8, that stood out without any need!

I am not aware of his review on the Insignia, but that's probably bland too...

    Ask yourself this
Would you rather have a £15K car that is eyecandy, but unreliable with poor network support
or a £15K car that is bland but can be fixed in just about any location throughout the UK (dealership within 25 miles)

When did he review the VXR against the M5?
