Default Has anyone sold there car like this?

This isn't a car for sale thread.

My wife is selling her car, it is advertised on a well known site and yesterday she gets a call. The callers says he lives about five hours away, but he really wants the car from the pictures and description. Now the weird part, he wants to pay by cheque, allow it to clear then have a car transport company pick the car up and deliver it to him, at his expense.
Where does she stand legally if she sells it this way. I have always sold cars face to face and had the seller test drive it and have them sign a reciept sold as seen. I don't think it is a scam, as he is located in this country.

If he pays the funds clear and then he collects it is a case of buyer beware, as you will have, - clearly stated the car is sold as seen, and has no defects no flaws other than those noted and no recourse will be accepted after the conclusion of the deal,,,,

Does sound dodgy but at same time I bought my vec without viewing an went halves with the seller on fees.

And a recovery company collected it and I paid them when car arrived.
    So could be genuine.

Perhaps get the person to ring and have a chat. And consider PayPal as you have some sort of back up then.

Heard of a similar scam. The cheque appears to clear in to the payees account. However it is a front and the money isn't actually there. I don't know how they do it, or how the money appears to clear fooling the bank.By the time the scam has been sussed it is too late; they are long gone.Be very wary.

Also dont forget that a cheque can be recalled by issuer for up to 6 months after it was issued, even if it is cleared.

Find out from your bank what they would charge for a cheque endorsement clearance
This means BEFORE you pay in the cheque they will phone up the payees bank and ensure there are funds
If there are, then that bank will freeze / hold those funds in security for 10 working days

It usually costs about £25, but well worth it for high value transactions

Equally, advise the buyer they must pay this cost, so find out how much it costs in advance
Alternatively, advise the buyer to arrange a bankers draft, the cost to them will be about the same
You can then take this straight to the bank; no questions asked!
