I was in the same dilemma, I wanted to service the car myself, firstly to save money and also to make sure that it was being done properly. Unfortunately all the warranty companies want service history done at a VAT registered garage so I couldn't renew mine.

If anything did go wrong with the car then I'm confident with the advice of people on here that I could at least have a go at repairing it myself.

If it was a garage job then I suppose its hard luck, but hopefully the car won't let me down!

I had the RAC one on mine. Claimed for the DMF and they knocked it back citing wear and tear. Well duh! everything breaks through wear and tear.
So panned it off and went with AA mechanical break down insurance. Wear & tear or not, they'll fix the damn thing if it's broken.

I have now owned my Vec for over 6 years. I had it serviced once at year 2 to maintain the 3rd year Vx warranty. Never had it serviced again (all the usual items I get done according to my own schedule spreadsheet). Over the 5 years of this philosophy, my total repairs total approx. £600. You have given the RAC £400 in 2years with no return and no replacement parts.
You may say I am just lucky and it could have been hundreds more (which it could have been), but, I would rather spend the money when I know it needs spending rather than giving it to some corporate organisation and leaving it to the balance of probability whether I get anything for my money or not.
I have been driving since 1979 with this philosophy and it has turned out to be a financially sound one over these years.
    Wisdom? Maybe. Scottish way? Definately!!

I am running Warranty Direct which does cover wear and tear,... but am considering just putting the money into a pot for any event, because if I am lucky then I have a nice pot of cash to spend on something else.
