    Default Signum popping sound

I wondered if anyone can advise, I am experiencing what I can only describe as a popping sound that I think is comming from the front of the car, the noise starts at 15-20mph gets more frequent at 50-60 to a point that it sounds like a warble. It is only faint but annoying. I have been on 2 test drives with the mechanic but dont feel he can hear it, he checked for loose joints etc but could only find a slight play in the steering rack ends and replaced them under warranty but the noise is still there. I have had the brakes and discs replaced all round and that made no difference. Im now thinking bearings or suspension? any ideas?

Popping sound..??? does it sound like air?? does it affect how the car runs??..Is it a misfire??..

if it was suspension it would make the nose at whatever speed the car was doing...wheelbearings drone constantly rather than pop..

its the kinda sound as if theres a loose joint sumwhere, a knocking but a soft knocking - if that makes sence. I dont notice it any worse over uneven surfaces, if i cruise at 20mph and wind down the window i can hear it everytime, at speed i feel it gets more frequent, its done 35K miles and is 3 years old in March, so thrying to nip it in the bud while under warranty.

Knocking??.. out of balance driveshaft??..worn outer CV race??..if it's speed related then it makes me think final drive transmission.. that'd be all that was related at the front to speed..

looks like you'll have to take it back and be a little more insistent that they investigate the car fully..

Sound like it might be the anti-roll bar link rods and joint (drop links)?

    Mark?

They'd knock more over uneven ground thought wouldn't they....

If it's only speed that affects it, not surface then i would plump for a rotating component...

It's darn hard trying to diagnose thinks from a vague description..(no offence Gary)..

does road surface have any affect on the noise??...louder and more frequent on uneven surfaces??

The noise is there no matter what surface i drive on. It just get more frequent the faster I go. He checked the anti roll links etc 2day but cuddnt find anything obvious, dont get me wrong he did seam quite thorough, I will ring him tomorrow as he had left when i collected the car this evening. If its a process of elimination I gotta keep pestering, so far it hasnt cost me anything! Could end up taking a while to locate this one. Im sure the noise has gotta be loader outside the car, I suggested the rolling road but he said there to noisy. Changing the shocks just to eliminate is gunna cost me dearly i guess?

I'd hold off on the shocks... i still think it's a rotating shaft or the like thats doing it... does it make the noise if the car's staionary and you just rev the engine??.. that would isolate it to just the engine..if it doesn't but does it when your moving then thats final drive train....

I'd also be looking at the bearing that supports the short horizontal driveshaft.. that failing would also give you a speed related noise..

stationary its fine, if i turn off the engine and just free-wheel its still there lightly applying brakes dont make no difference, i dont think im getting any side effects, the car does pull to the left a little which im lead to believe the signum is sensitive to road cambers? Intermittantly I have had steering wheel wobble even though ive had all wheels balanced and alligned. Today it didnt wobble once, but the noise still persists. At speed i sometimes think its from the rear but it could be the wind carrying the noise do you think?

it could well be.. if it's not engine related and not happening when stationary, then i think it must be driveshaft related if it's from the front end...

as for the noise being 'blown' to the back, i'm not convinced....

Best to take it back to the dealers and have another word with the tech.. tell them what you've told me. and suggest he looks at the driveshaft support carrier bearings to see if they're okay.. other than that i'd put it on a rolling road to hunt for it..you will still hear it over the engine noise..It's just that VX don't have one, thats why he's not keen to use one as they'll have to pay..until they can charge you for it..
