confused Unusual regen for my car.

Having lived with a CDTI estate for over two years, I know and recognise when the car starts a regen. So, arrived at work this morning, parked up and sure enough she starts a regen. Looked at the time and thought *&&!! don't have enough time to go for a drive and not good to switch off, dilemma!! Held the revs at 2000, instant mpg showing 1.5 gallons per hour and could smell the DPF getting hot, nothing unusual so far.
Now, I have been here before, but today was the first time in 14 regens that the car park filled with smoke during this process, I actually thought the engine had blown. After ten minutes the regen completed, instant consumption returned to 0.1 gallons per hour, as it should be, engine running sweet and no smoke.
Have any owners of DPF equipped cars seen clouds of smoke during a regen? as this is a first for my car, she normally doesn't smoke like that during the regen process.

Hi Barney, not had a regen on my vectra as it is a hatch and does not have a dpf. However on my Astra I have and it started when I was pulling away from a roundabout and I noticed in the mirrors what seemed to be a huge cloud of smoke. Assumed it was the regen starting so went for a drive and all was well. Must admit though if you did not know you would think something serious was up. Still think there sould be some indication on the dash that the regen is in progress.

The dash warning was removed by VX as too many owners came in asking what the warning meant! RTFM would have been my answer

Ty Darrin, My car has never smoked during regen, that's what threw me this morning. I fully understand the regen process and what happens, in fact i could write an essay on it, but never seen one smoke. Was wondering if the honeycomb in the DPF has shattered, allowing excess smoke from the overfuelling to pass freeley through it, like when people remove the inside of the dpf without disabling the regen software. Fully agree there should be some indication on the dash when regen in progress.

Our Signum puts out brown smoke when it regens and always seems to do it when i drive it.

I will when I get chance get it removed and mapped out before it causes any trouble as the car is on 150k

Barney, I have a 120 estate (140k). My last regen (after I noticed I had a split on the exhaust flexi pipe) started just before I pulled in a car park. After reading some great posting on the subject of regens that some members have put up I decided to pull over into a empty corner of the car park and sat with the revs at 3000. The car was engulfed in blue smoke and the readout was showing 1.7 galls. After seven minutes it completed and calm returned the fog cleared and like you I just let it run on tickover for a few minutes with consumption showing the normal 0.1 galls. Normally I get a regen when I'm on the move and only notice the delicate swirl of smoke in the rear view mirror. A stationary regen is quite an experience - hard to believe it's to cut down on pollution.

Quite an experience is about right Journeyman. I can relate to the phrase engulfed in blue smoke. Most of my regens have been on the move and hardly noticeable so it must be due to static regen, never again, next time i will take her for a drive. Ty for your post.

It's what cars fitted with diesel particulate filters do when they burn off the soot that's collected in the filter. Mostly fitted to diesel Veccy estates, Signum and cars fitted with auto trans.
