    Default Thermostat Replacement

I'm new to vx, and have noticed that the temp gauge doesnt move whilst I'm on motorway driving between Stirling and Glasgow, however, when in traffic, it'll move and fall between 90 and 0, never going over the 90 mark...

Presumably this is the common thermostat problem, and as such, I wondered if anyone can point me in the direction of somewhere to get it fixed (and for not a lot of money !) ?

    Thanks in advance

There's a HOWTO on changing the 1.8 thermostat. I did mine a few months ago - it really is a very easy job: Undo bottom radiator hose clip, pull hose off, drain coolant into a washing up bowl. Undo clips on the hoses on the thermostat housing and pull the hoses off. Unclip the wiring plug from the thermostat housing. Undo the bolts holding the thermostat housing onto the engine block. Remove housing and discard. Clean area on block where housing goes. Get shiny new housing (complete with thermostat and sensor) and it's seal out of the GM box. Put seal in groove. Put new housing on engine block and refit bolts. Reattach sensor wiring and hoses. Refit hose clips. Refit bottom radiator hose and clip. Mix up coolant and water (50/50) and pour into filler until at the MIN level. Start engine. Run up to temperature checking for leaks. Rev to 3000rpm for a few seconds - you should see bubbles in the coolant tank. Top up if it goes below the MIN level. Switch off and allow to cool. Top up coolant again if needed. Job done

I just did mine, its very easy but you will lose all your coolant/anti freeze, so make sure you buy some first ready to top it up, also my car (2.2i) is the same, in fact runs cooler now I have changed it, runs around 80-85oc, I dont think they are supposed to run at 90oc (in the middle)
