    Default direct & non direct

    hey guy's just a quick question i have a 53 plate 2.2 sri petrol.

    whats the difference between direct and non direct ?

    this might be a silly question but i am new to the vec c so any help would be great.

    Yours will be non direct

    Im a diesel man but I know the direct has a 6 speed gearbox

    You've got the non direct engine.

    Slightly less BHP. 147, IIRC, and the Direct has 155 BHP.
    One backbox, not two.
    Only an electrical fuel pump, that rarely goes wrong. The Direct has two - an electrical one and a mechanical high pressure one, the HP one has had problems, along with the fuel regulator.
    Few other changes, but they're the main ones that I'm aware of.

    The auto has 5 speed. I thought the early manual boxes had only 5 as well.

    143bhp and 152bhp as far as I'm aware (although could be wrong)

    As said though, main differences are the gearbox is five speed on the Z22SE (non-direct) and 6 speed on the Z22YH (direct) and a bit less power.

    The 2.2 non-direct is basically a longer stroke version of the engine in the 2.0T but normally aspirated, it's actually quite pokey, I had one for a couple of years and it's surprising how much power it will give if driven right. Because it's a long stroke it's a little low on power lower down the rev range.

    Does the old 2.2i have twin exit pipes?... I know the direct does. Apparently the direct is more punchy than the non direct

    No, the non-direct is single exhaust standard, the direct, as you say is twin.

    Doesn't the Direct also have swirl valves in the inlet manifold?

    the direct in 2004 and until late 2005 only had 5 speed gearbox.. then the 6 speed came available.
