    Default Lifespan of a 1.8VVT

    Hi,

What do you think the lifespan is of a (well maintained) Vectra 1.8VVT engine is? Mine has done 70K and, before I spend toooo much money on the car, I would be interested to know what the typical mileage on that engine is before its death. If it's likely to conk out at 100K then I might be better buying a lower mileage car.

Not the same engines I know, but I put 175k on my Carlton 1.8, and 155k on my Cavalier 1.6, and 101k on my Manta!

And they're all much older designs - so as said above, look after it and a pinch of luck and it can go for a lot longer!

100k? I dont know of any engine that cant make 150k easy these days. Regular oil and filter changes(avoiding VX service recommendations) is the best way to extend the life of any engine imo. Of course not bouncing it off the rev limiter every gear will help a bit too.

My first Vectra B went to 140K miles (in 6 years) and it is still showing on databases with current MoT and RFL

I would expect at least 100K miles out of any modern car (and as the years go by this to increase to 150K miles before long)
If you require your car to/from work, then look at a third party warranty once the OE warranty expires at 80K miles
You will note most third party warranties will not cover in excess of 100K miles

There should be no reason why your engine can't do 300.000mls without major work been done if you service it regular, the key is the oil and filter changes and using good quality oil.

We had gas fork lifts from new serviced by us they did equivilent of 350k before the heads came off for work all we did was change the filters regular and these engines run very hot.

Most cars die around 150k or 10 years old due to neglect or extended servicing which gets to 18 months or 2 years the oil is sludge the engine packs in.

So if that was mine id use nothing cheaper than vauxhalls own brand oil and genuine filters, the oil i like is Millers oils but the price is a bit higher, you may need to use a little thicker oils as it gets on a bit like semi synthetic 15/40 when it's doing 150k.
