Default DTUK + insurance = WTF!?

I recently bought a DTUK red box from a fellow member but due to work & holidays etc I didn't get chance to set it up until this week. Being the good diligent motorist that I am I called the insurance company to inform them of the mod but was stunned by their demand for an additional £200 to cover the remaining 4 months premium. On top of this the best price I can get for next years cover is almost £900! Making my CDTI more expensive than a VXR to insure! Needless to say the box has been banished to the garage!

    Anyone else had similar issues?

Sorry if this should be in the insurance section.

Wouldn't go admitting that on a public forum. Especially if you put pictures of your car up with your reg on.

What Mark said, there's no way in hell I'd tell them about a tuning box. Tuning boxes don't cause crashes, bad driving does - they know this and that's why I view the extra cash demand as a scam.

And this new forum colour is melting my eyes

I'm of the belief that the insurance company will do anything they can to avoid a payout and by not declaring mods, I give them a perfect excuse & line myself up for a whole world of hassle. Not to mention the £450-£500 I pay them which would be wasted if I lie & invalidate my policy! As my mum says.. "Braking the law is braking the law regardless of your opinion".

Think I'll finally be getting my finger out my arse and signing up to full membership so I can make use of the for sale section. lol.

not wise to drive without declaring power mods. if an accident happens and the hood gets jammed (responsible party irrelevant), the presence of a tuning box will result in an insurance assessor jobworth rubbing its hands with glee.

There was a thread on MSE where a guy had his insurance claim turned down because he hadn't told them he'd fitted alloy wheels, the car had suffered a fire in one of the doors, nothing to do with the wheels. Doesn't pay to not inform your insurance company, if you have an accident they will pay out third party but you are likely to nothing towards repair/replacement of your pride and joy.

So you basically have zero insurance clever that.

If you can't afford the additional insurance don't mod your car....simples.

Its reasons like this people are moaning about increased insurance premiums.

I sent copies of all my mod invoices along with a written account to my insurance company so I'm covered. I've spent over £3k modding my car and would want that back if it gets written off etc like for like.

Im lucky though as not a fat lot of dif between the £460 pa quote for standard power and the £630 for ALL my additional mods and power.
