    Default Air con question

I have checked the gas level in the system and it is ok, there are no leaks.

With the engine running I turn the air con on. The revs drop slightly and I can hear something clunk into gear under the bonnet so it all sounds as if it is working as it should do.

Despite all this it still does not blow out any cold air. It is just like having the normal fan turned on.

Is there anything else to check or does the gas in the air con need replacing?

    Thanks in advance.

How did you check it? the gas level may appear ok but if the gas has lost the refrigerant, then it's never going to cool down

I bought a DIY air con recharge canister and it came with a gauge to check the level. This says that there is already enough gas in the system and it doesnt need topping up.

I don,t think so, it blows hot and cool air when the air con is not turned off as it should.

The trouble with the diy can is ... it doesn't know the difference between gas & refrigerant... all it does is it gives you the pressure, that still doesn't mean you have the correct amount of refrigerant.

When you go to an air con service centre, the gas is removed completely, this then allows the gas to be tested, then when the vacuum test has finished it is refilled with new gas & the correct amount of refrigerant including a uv dye... which is then all printed on to a sheet for you to see.

Go to Kwick-Fit, get them to re-charge your system. The machine is automatic, it drains your system and re-cycles any useful gas. It then pressure tests it for leaks and finally re-fills with gas. All for less then £50!

Never believe what the DIY death kit can tells you.

It's no replacement for a human being and a machine.
