    Default Advice needed !

    Hi all,

I have a problem and im after your opinion.
Ok so Monday the 7th I go to Adsa and fill up my CDTI Vx Vectra SRI 150 with diesel, I then drive the 4 miles to home, go to work in the morning of Tuesday 8th and after work drive home, 60 mile round trip. Wednesday 9th, up for work and the car starts but is chugging like mad, blue smoking and no revs at all and eventfully stalls. I drive to work in the wife's car and arrange with the garage at the top of my road (halfords autocare) to pick the car up and give me a diagnosis about midday. 1pm I get a call, the mechanic says 100% that the car is full of petrol!! I ask him to check the receipt in the centre console in the car, he does so and it clearly states "pump 2 diesel" to which I'm very confused but he assures me its petrol in the car and and took a sample from the tank on a dry rag, put a flame to it and it burst in to flames and so confirming its petrol.
So I go to Asda and kick off but I'm told by the manager there was no other complaints at all and its not possible to have petrol in the diesel pumps. I now return to the mechanic who again says that it's petrol and that's it, no way it can be diesel. The guy then recommended a local drain down company to remove the fuel as they couldn't do it. I took the phone number from him and thanked him for his time. The guy also said not to mention halfords to anyone as he would get in trouble for recommending another garage, I agreed.*

I called the number and the drain down guy came out after paying £175 on the phone. The guy was very nice and came out within 30 minutes and started the process of removing the petrol. I asked for a sample to go in to a new petrol can as evidence so I could take this up with Asda head office, he agreed. About a litre went into the can and after many sniffing tests we poured some on to a rag and took a lighter to it, I just had to see with my own eyes to believe it. And would you believe it no flame up concluding that it was in fact diesel in the ****** car after all! Also took a sample from the diesel filter as well as the tank and it's diesel for sure it was even yellow in colour! The drain down company refuse to refund ANY of the £175 despite only coming a couple of miles to my address and spending 10 minutes taking out a litre only.*

So what do I do now? The car has now been towed to a "proper garage" and awaiting a new diagnosis.*
Do I ring the halfords garage? Do I bypass them and go to head office and get the original mechanic in trouble? I want my money back from halfords as he referred me to this drain down company under a false diagnosis! I'm so fed up with this and at a loss what to do now.
    Your thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.
    Neil*

This manager is a numpty, however he may be following company policy not to admit liability

You need to contact your car insurance legal cover, they will pursue the matter
KEEP that receipt and make at least three copies

Contact the local authorities Petroleum Officer
The petrol station you used should be able to provide contact details

Send one copy to this person
A good Petroleum Officer will actually attend the same day, as this is a SERIOUS issue and needs to be actioned as soon as ANY customer reports it

Next, report this DIRECT to the Store Manager at this Asda store (not just the petrol station Manager)
Once you've done this, report it to Asda HQ

Finally, send one copy of this to Asda HQ

    edit :
Just realised the OP goes on to explain that Halfords are actually at fault
Looks like there was residual petrol, this then floated on top of the diesel and ignited, numpty
However the way in which the Manager at Asda dealt with this is still incorrect!

But when the drain company arrived it was in fact diesel and not petrol.

Edit: But I see what your getting at now, Asda didnt want to go through the process of investigating etc

Can you check the colour of the injector plug no.3. It should be blue or if it needs upgrading yellow.

    Did you fill the tank?
When was the fuel filter last replaced?

Yes, I had to go back and reread after posting, see the edit I added at the end
Shows lack of experience in fuel handling by the numpty from Halfords (assuming that was the garage referred to)...
All round incompetence by both parties

The numpty was an ex 7 year AA patrolman and had apperently seen it a 1000 times... Obviously wasn't enough times for him!!
