Default Confused over front brake disc size Signum 2.0t

    Hi all

Please help me and my friend out. We are going to have a garage replace his front and rear brake discs and pads.

The rears are 292mm and we have bought the parts but looking at his fronts they seem to measure around 285mm. I thought these should have been 302mm so its causing us some confusion.

Could 285mm up front for a 2.0t be right as going by Jezzy's post here it should be 302mm.

Maybe the previous owner did a swap but note sure.

Will have the wheel off tomorrow to get an exact measurement, but I just find this a bit strange.

He has a 2004 2.0t Signum Elegance on 16" Rims.

Can someone clarify the correct size please.

    Many thanks

Unless someone has changed them at some point they'll be 302s

Thanks John. Thats what I thought.

If they are 285mm up front would that casue an issue with the up and coming MOT. Do they take size into account or just the fact they work correctly.

    Cheers

Not sure if the MOT takes a front to rear brake imbalance into account, you'd have to look into that one (vosa website)

surely if now got 285 discs then calipers have been changed also or the older calipers & pads for 302mm discs would be hanging over edge of discs ,

Possibly the old owner wanting to make a quick bit of cash by selling the 302's and fitting some cheap 285's instead...

    Anything is possible

Or they've maybe had a seized caliper and they were the only ones they could lay their hands on

I wonder if it makes a major difference having bigger brakes on the back than the front like that on a car like the Vectra/Signum...

Are you measuring the disk with the wheel still on? That'll never give you an accurate measurement - remember you're looking for a difference of just 17mm between the 285s and 302s.

My guess would be that the brake balance check in the MOT is for discrepancies between left and right brakes on the same axle, not between front and rear brakes.

The MOT tester won't have any interest at all in what size the brakes are - you could turn up with a drum conversion on the front brakes - as long as they stop the wheels in an efficient manner, that's fine.
