Post 1.8 revs stuck after starting, EM on!

    Hey all,

A few weeks ago I had problems starting, it started but after a few seconds it stalled, it then took about 5 or 6 attempts to start again, seem to turn over ok but just wouldn't start, was fine after it started. Before hand the car was left for 2 or 3 nights in damp and wet weather.

Today though, started fine, went about 1/2 mile to shop, came back out and the engine started but the revs kept going to idle speed, then the engine nearly stalled but the engine went back to idle, with the EM on and just kept this cycle until I turned it off. After another attempt the car started but this time the revs went up to about 2000 rpm and stuck there with EM on. On both times pressing the accelerator did nothing. Tried turning on ignition but not starting engine and EM still came on.
After about 4 or 5 attempts at starting it started normally and has been fine since...

So, anyone got any ideas? I'm lost. Can only think of the O2 sensor but there's that many these days... only other thing I can think that is relavent is that mpg seems rather poor atm...
    Its a 1.8 petrol 53 plate.
Going to try and get the fault code read when I can find someone with a reader...

    Don't need a fault code reader for a 1.8

Just press brake and accelerator pedals and turn ignition on (don't start it). The codes will flash on the MIL.

Do a search for the exact procedure if it doesn't work for you - I know it did work on my 53 1.8 Dual Fuel Elegance, but since spending a whole £10 on a USB to OBDII/EOBD interface I haven't needed to do the pedal method.

Found a post about using the pedal method for the fault codes and tried it earlier on, got the following codes...

1525 - Air bypass valve system
    1526 - Air bypass system
1550 - PSPS out of self test range

Found on other posts that this could be a dirty throttle body issue (remember having a similar prob on a Calibra) so followed the guide on here and removed it earlier, cleaned it out by steaming the dirt out, fitted back in and seems ok. Will just have to wait and see if it solves the prob.

Have added some before and after photos in the hope it will help others...

    After...

So I've had a run out in the car this morning and things seem good.
Used to have some hesitation when going from 1st to 2nd under hard(ish) acceleration, but now it just continues accelerating after changing.

Now just gotta look at fuel consumption...

    Excellent.

You should be able to get 50mpg+ on a 1.8 if you try hard enough (never exceed 2000rpm except on dual carriageways, leave plenty of room from the car in front so you don't have to brake when they slow, don't use cruise control, keep the revs constant not the speed etc). My normal driving style gets more like 41mpg though.

Was the top side as bad as the bottom side? Might take the intake pipe off for a look and see how bad mine looks.

The inside body part was the worst with only a bit coming through to the outside, but the valve was filthy on both sides and around its edge which i think combined with the filth on the body was making the valve stick.
As soon as i took pipe off the top of it i could see the valve was filthy so just took the full thing out to clean.
