Lock the car using the remote control, wait a minute or two, then unlock the door using the key in the lock and open the door.

No, cos you will bash your fist on the window.

    As others have said.

Or, fully open window, tape a sheet of newspaper in its place and then punch through the newspaper after setting the alarm and waiting 30 seconds to test the ultrasonics.

Or do as I did, jack it up. I set the alarm off trying to take a wheel off, I didn't unlock the car first and disable the alarm. Nearly sh~te myself.

You can also individually test each door.

    1. Disable the ultrasonics.
    2. Leave the windows open enough to be able to reach in and lift the buttons.
    3. Press the remote plipper once just to lock the doors, but not to arm the deadlocks.
    4. Reach in and lift the door button and open the door.
    5. Press plipper to silence alarm.

Repeat steps 1 though 5 for each door. If you're careful, or if your ultrasonics aren't that sensitive (like mine) then you don't have to bother disabling them.
