    Default Anyone up for a Euro road trip ?

    Hi all, who'd be up for a Euro road trip to ..... MONACO..!

    Starting from Dover on Friday 21st September and returning to Calais on Friday 28th September.

    Ferry.

    Outbound ferry from Dover to Calais departing 21/09/2012 at 6:40am and arriving in Calais at 9:10am (French time) sailing with P&O on 'The Pride of Kent'.
    Inbound ferry from Calais to Dover departing 28/09/2012 at 5:15pm (French time) and arriving in Dover at 5:45pm GMT, sailing on 'Spirit of Britain'.

    Cost of ferry at the moment is £74.00 all in (may cost extra if you take a roofbox/bike rack/trailer), but if you book later, it'll get dearer the closer it gets to the departure date, probably over £100 if you book last minute !

    The Route.

    As this is a holiday and not a race, the journey down will be a steady 2 day drive.
    The route will be pretty much all motorway driving and it's 770 miles approx from Calais to Monaco, all but 10 of those miles are on the motorways.
    It'd be nice to stop off 'en route' for some sight seeing/car photo's, we do have a week ! So also take this into consideration.

    The Motoring Costs.

    So, motoring costs ... the cost of fuel is obviously dependant on your driving style and what engine you have under the bonnet be it petrol or diesel !

    These fuel costs are based on my own 2.0T petrol engine and are approximate prices.
    Calais to Monaco is coming out at around £140 each way.

    The other main cost will be the road tolls. The motorways in France if you've never been before are superb to drive on and almost empty !
    Calais to Monaco road tolls are coming in at around £87.00 each way.

    Optional but recommended- European breakdown cover. I tend to use the RAC Euro cover (only because i'm in the RAC) which is quoting me £41.40 That is with 10% discount for booking online as a member.

    Accomodation.

    Camping if the weather is fine, budget hotels if it's wet & cold, but remember it is on the usually hot and sunny Med !
    Cost = £?

    Summery.

    Travel - So, depart from Dover on Friday 21st and take 2 steady days camping overnight to get to Monaco (arriving there sometime saturday pm), stay in the area exploring/chilling/sunbathing from Sunday to Wednesday, then start the return leg on thursday, getting back to Calais on Friday for a 5:15pm departure to Dover.

    Costs (approx and return trip) - Ferry £74, Fuel - £280 (based on 2.0T petrol engine), Tolls - £174, Euro breakdown cover - £41.

    Total = £569.00
    2 in a car would be £285 each.
    3 in a car would be £190 each.
    4 in a car would be £143 each.

    Accomodation/Food & drink costs are unknown at the moment.

    So what you think, would anyone be interested in doing this ?

    Looks good Phil, Why not use the eurotunnel instead of slow old ferry, I've used the Eurotunnel for two trips to France in the past two weeks and each time it was only £44 return and quicker/easier than the ferry ??

    If our finances are sorted by then we might be interested if there's a few people doing it although at the moment I couldn't get the money together for the breakdown cover let alone the rest (and we haven't even got passports at the moment lol).

    We'll see what interest there is nearer the time and let you know if our finances would be up for it.

    I personally would need to know how many would DEFINATELY go before commiting to book my ferry/Euro tunnel ticket, so your okay on that front Ian.

    Sounds good. I priced up a trip to Top Gear's 'Worlds greatest driving road' in Italy via nurburg ring. It was a little more expensive but i like the sound of this. Tunnel is better for me as the ferry would be chunder central for me. Maybe one of the more mechanically minded members could pack tools too, for minor breakdowns

    Just priced the "Le tunnel" Pete, it's quoted me £126 return. Where did you book yours ? Do you pre-book multi trips to get the price down ?
