Got asked to 'Check Brake Light' by my very polite vectra today. I did and there was no issues. Any ideas?

Possibly one of the brake bulbs on its way out. When the filament starts to degrade it looses its resistance and the canbus system recognises this.
If a brake light fails, then a tail light illuminates in its place, so make sure you haven't got one brake light and one tail light illuminating.

Rebellion is almost correct. The lower tail light takes over the role of tail/brake light should the upper tail/brake light fail.

I had an issue with the contacts on the bulbs corroding. A break in the connection threw up the message.
Lol ste or a bag of crisps
I've cleaned the thread up so that the OP can maybe get an answer (although I think he has now) amongst all the other stuff
