Default Signum 2.2 direct Balance shaft chain help

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice. My 2.2 direct signum (z22yh engine) started making the dreaded timing chain rattle, so I bought a GM timing chain kit and went to replace it. Once the engine was stripped down to the chains me and my mate noticed the timing chain was absolutely fine, almost looked brand new. Upon further inspection we noticed it was the balancer shaft chain which was causing the rattle. Was barely hanging on at all. I thought that may also explain why is was getting a very slight vibration through the car.

My question is, neither of us have ever done the balancer shaft chain, but have done timing chains a few times. Does the balancer shaft chain have to be timed up the way the timing chain does? Wasnt sure if it was a simple put on the new part.

Has anyone else heard of these chains failing?

Would that also explain the slight vibration I was getting when the car was ticking over. Also lumpy idle?

Does the vauxhall balance shaft kit include all the gears?

    Cheers in advance

it should be changed at the same time as you do the timing chain, the chain tensioner as well. the balancer gears are not important but there to reduce engine vibration but quite a few guys have removed them and used a shorted chain just to keep the waterpump turning.

Doing the balance shaft 'delete' or fitting neutral balance shafts will give you another 10bhp

Had exactly the same when I did my timing chain, the balancer shaft chain was very loose and the obvious culprit for the rattle, bit of a kick in the teeth when you've just spent nearly £200 on a timing chain!

Also Vauxhall don't supply the balancer chain as a kit and IIRC it was going to cost well over £200 for everything, in the end we figured out that it was the tensioner that was nackered so we just replaced that, even that cost £50 and looks like it cost 50p to make. Been rattle fee for nearly a year now

Cheers for the quick replies guys. I heard of the balance delete kit, had a look online but cant find one. Really gutted about buying the timing chain, but may aswell do them both now. Went to order balance chain this morning and ****** vauxhall are closed for the bank holiday, so another day or two to wait to get my poor wee car done. In the meantime I have the pleasure of driving about an old s reg 1.4 saxo my friend loaned me haha.

Is there anywhere online you can buy the delete kit? Ive read some forums where guys have machined there own parts to do it. Dont feel to confident doing that though.

Think ill consider doing it when im at it, as the 10 extra horses would be a nice little bonus.

Level Zero Motosports in yankieland sell them and ship them worldwide. Neutral shafts are bought from Gmperformance site.

Rushy, yes this will be part of my new engine before it goes in.

From all my reading I have yet to find any owner who is unhappy with it after this mod.

Thats what I was a bit worried about paul, not running as smooth. Think ill just get the vauxhall parts tomorrow. Will post back on how it goes.

Just to ask, I was having another look around the timing chain this morning and I noticed the teeth on the timing chain gears/sprockets are very faded, and a couple are slightly chipped. Would that suggest the chain or tensioner alone have maybe been changed in the past and maybe the chain has jumped a few teeth? Ive got the new timing kit anyway so will get it done.

    Will post with any updates.

    Cheers boys
