Default Heater is only working when moving??

Odd one this... Only. Started this morning? Fans work fine, but only get heat when moving? Come to stand still and they start going cold again?

Looked under bonnet.. No visible leaks... Water level fine, temp gauge on dash works fine... Any ideas guys? 2006 1.9 cdti Vec.

    Cheers for Any help!

I had simlar in a mondeo. It was the water pump that had lost its drive. It was not siezed but the impellors were not rotating with the cranshaft. It was only when the car was moving that g-force was causing the water to move around. When going up a hill, the heater would work as the water was finding its way into the heater matrix. When going downhill, it would cool down.

You should be able to see the return water going back into the header tank, But if it was a major water pump problem it would be overheating, could be an air lock for some strange reason.

Thanks guys... Really odd as been out to cinema, good 10mile round trip, drove normal and no overheat?

Heaters got hot.. And when turned up slightly smelly? Not burning though!? Then went cooler??

Garage job me thinks? Beyond me??

Your heater matrex has gone. You will find when you rev the engine, not in gear, the heater will work as it has slight block. Sounds like its leaking as well. Is there a how to on here anybody?

Well.. Today it started overheating.. So it's in the garage! Hoping it's the water pump? Makes sense, not lost any water atall, runs a dream.. But as it started climbing to 100 degrees today.. Time to limp it to garage (which took forever with plenty of stopping!) I await the verdict!

Sounds like classic water pump failure symptoms, hopefully an easy fix! Maybe worth considering fitting a new timing belt if the pump has got to be replaced, saves the hassle of having to get the belt done in the future.

Yep, as I stated, it sounded like a classic symptom of when my water pump failed. Hope it is as easy as that for you. When that happened to me, I just kept driving as it was midnight in the middle of nowhere and the car was almost shot in any case. Engine was sizzling by the time I got home. Traded it in the week after.
