Default Ever seen an air filter this screwed?

Id like to add this is not my filter. It came from my mates vw passat. He was complaing about lack of acceleration so i suggested we look at his air filter in our lunch break. I opened it up and a load of crap fell out and one badly buckled and torn filter came out. I told him the filter was pretty bad but the big gap in the filter would let enough air (and debris) into the engine. I cleaned his boost sensor (which looked ok) and told him to check fuel filter next and prey no foreign body has damaged his engine. Oops!!!!

I saw one on a vivaro once that had most of the paper blocking the intercooler hose. That's a good one though

I used to work for a well known hydraulic filter manufacturer. Hydraulic filters are commonly found in that condition when they go onto bypass and not changed and the pressure exceeds the nominal bypass pressure which then makes the filter collapse.
I wonder how much pressure that air filter had seen to make it take that amount of damage?
Also makes you wonder what sort of damage it does to sensors as the car must have been running like crap! Its like trying to run a marathon whilst being strangled!

Never seen one that has colapsed, like that. I wonder if it has sucked up some water, at some point.
