Default New summer toy nearly running

There was a thread on here a few weeks ago about buying a MG TF.

I wasn't really looking for a toy but it made me have a search on ebay to see what was about and any bargains.

An 02 MG TF that had a head gasket gone and was about 50 miles away had 5 minutes left and only had one bidder and going for a steal.

So put in a bid at the last second and we bought this

Got a friend to deliver it to the garage where I work last Friday and took the head off.

Sent it down for reconditioning and and ordered all the other parts needed inc water pump, cambelt and tensioners etc. When I took it all apart I noticed it had a new water pump and tensioner allready but no reciepts to prove it had been done (Since found out it was done 4k miles ago lol) so going to fit a new one for peice of mind.

Collected the head tonight and now got all the parts together ready to refit this weekend

Roll on the ned of the rain so I can give it a good machine polish

nice wee project mate and very unusual for a rover to have head gasket probs lol,is the head problem not something to do with plastic head locating dowels and crappy factory gaskets,i beleive that there is a mod involving metal dowels which cures the prob,

    Yes and yes.

The head set you can see has the Lotus designed head gasket (Has a stainless layer sandwiched between 2 other layers) and a pair of stainless locators to help stop the head moving.

We fit this head set on all the K series we do and not one has come back (Touch wood).

Down to BandA ( http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/local/e...g/ai_43040.php )in Portsmouth.

Its the company we use at the garage and cost £70 + Vat

It was chemicaly cleaned then pressure and crack tested, then the valves lapped in and the new valve seals I supplied fitted.

    Default

the main thing apart from the paper thin head gasket is the head tank lid , it doesnt seal properly and lets the pressure out so effectivly losing water through steam , i'd recommend retro fitting a more reliable header tank off something else after you've rebuilt it pal

I have read on a few forums that the rad cap should be replaced as a service item so I have a new one of them to go on too
